What is Raksha Bandhan?
Raksha Bandhan, also known as Rakhi, is a beautiful Indian festival that celebrates the special bond between brothers and sisters. The name Raksha Bandhan comes from two Sanskrit words:
• “Raksha” means protection
• “Bandhan” means a bond or tie
So, Raksha Bandhan means “the bond of protection.”
When is it Celebrated?
Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravan (usually in August). Families gather together on this day to honour and strengthen the love between siblings.
What Happens During the Ritual?
On Raksha Bandhan:
1. Sisters tie a rakhi – a decorated thread or bracelet – on their brothers’ wrists.
2. They apply a tilak (a mark with sandalwood or vermilion) on their brothers’ foreheads.
3. They perform a small aarti (a ritual of light).
4. Brothers give gifts or money to their sisters as a token of love.
5. Most importantly, brothers promise to protect their sisters and stand by them in all situations.
Sometimes, girls also tie rakhis to their cousins, friends, or even sisters, showing that the festival is about love and care—not just tradition.
Why is Raksha Bandhan Important?
• It reminds us of the importance of family and looking out for each other.
• It teaches respect, responsibility, and care for others.
• It brings siblings closer and creates memories that last a lifetime.
• It encourages unity and harmony within families and communities.
Did You Know?
• In ancient times, queens and sages sent rakhis to kings asking for help or protection during war!
• Today, even soldiers, teachers, and leaders receive rakhis from children as a thank-you for keeping them safe.
